PROGRAM NOTES FROM JANUARY 6, 2012
PERSONAL FITNESS TO BE FOCUS OF 2012
Sam Powers, the Economic Development Director for the city of Asheville and Ben Van Camp, the Executive Director of the Regional Sports Authority were our program. They focused on the economic impact of the renovation of the Asheville Civic Center and the sports events that are possible as a result of the renovation. The renovation will be completed in 42 days and the Southern Conference Basketball Tournament will take place in 48 days. The Southern Conference Tournament was the catalyst for an amazing transformation of the Civic Center. The renovation cost $8.5 million which includes seating, risers, lighting, sound, food and drink stations, acoustics, and dressing rooms. The Southern Conference was formed in 1921 with the original teams now in the SEC in the ACC. Today there are 12 schools in the conference – Appalachian State, The College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Samford, Chattanooga, Western Carolina, and Wofford. The Southern Conference Basketball Tournament will be in Asheville March 2-5, 2012 and will involve 23 men's and women's teams. 8,000 people are expected to come. They will take up 4,000 room nights and have $4 million in economic impact. The first rounds of the women’s tournament will be at the University of North Carolina Asheville. Ticket prices are very affordable with a two game session being only $9. Rotarians are encouraged us to send groups of youth to the games.
