THE CHILDREN'S HOME OF TACACHIA, BOLIVIA
Carrie Blackburn Brown and Gavin Brown spoke on their children’s home in Tacachia, Bolivia. It is the Kory Wawanaca Children’s Home, a residential and cultural center established to provide a loving home for orphaned and abandoned children. CARRIE AND Gavin are the Director’s and operate the home. They secure funding and lead all aspects of the home’s operation. The home is operated within the United Methodist Church, and the children are court directed. The home is in the village of Tacachia on the outskirts of La Paz, It was started in the fall of 2005 and finished in June 2008. They have presently 20 children ranging from 3 years to 13 years of age. Carrie and Gavin are both graduates of Appalachian State University. Much of their resources come from the churches in Waynesville, Asheville, and across North Carolina, and some from Minnesota. A dollar goes a long way there. Currently they are building a home that will house the teens as the children age out of the present home setting. The children learn in their understanding or agricultural endeavors as they plant and tend crops, do washing, prepare meals for the family, and work on and within the building. They are given opportunities to grow in their appreciation of their indigenous language and culture, and gain environmental knowledge. They presented a video of the home and introduced the children in their family. They now have 20 children and hope to eventually grow to 30 in number, providing education, support and resources throughout life for the children.

STOP HUNGER NOW PROJECT SET FOR FEBRUARY 20TH Haywood County Rotarians will be joining with students from Haywood County schools and members of Long's Chapel Methodist Church on Saturday, February 20th to package 60,000 meals for the Stop Hunger Now Foundation. The meals will all be delivered to Haiti and distributed at local schools. The cost of a meal is 25 cents. Teams of Rotarians will work together in a 3rd shift beginning at 2:30 p.m. and running to 4:30 p.m. with a goal of packaging 25,000 meals. Blake Stanberry is the Waynesville Rotary Club Champion for this event and Cecil Yount is the District 7670 Team 7 Coordinator. Please plan to dedicate 2 hours of your time on Saturday, February 20th in support of this important project. Individuals wishing to make additional donations of money may do so by writing a check to the Waynesville Rotary Foundation and earmarking it for Stop Hunger Now. All proceeds will go toward the approximate $3,250.00 cost of purchasing the materials for the project. The 3 Rotary clubs will share in the costs based upon relative size of each club. |
OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE! Manna BackPack Challenge: 31 Waynesville Rotarians accepted Karen Denny’s and Floyd Rogers’s challenge to match their donation to the Manna Food Bank Backpack program. A sponsorship is $122.00 per student. If you have made this commitment, please make your check payable to the Waynesville Rotary FOUNDATION instead of Waynesville Rotary. Your leadership has determined that it would be best for these monies to go directly to the Foundation rather than through the club account. This will also give you the advantage of some tax breaks by making the donation. Simply indicate on your check that the donation is for the Manna Food Bank Backpack Challenge. If additional members wish to join this effort, please feel free to do so. Simply make out your check as noted above and give it to Scot Worley, Lynne Barrett, Bill Bird, or Neal Ensley at one of the Friday meetings. For more information, contact Past President Lynne. Boy Scout Troop support: An additional opportunity to support our community is by making a donation to the Boy Scout Troop led by our own Rotarian Billy Dinwiddie, Jr. The Pack is in serious need of a trailer and some other items. Any interested Rotarian, especially former Scouts, are urged to support this effort. Again, please make your check payable to the Waynesville Rotary Foundation. For more information, contact Bill Bird.
