HONERKAMP ADDRESSES COMMUNITY HOMELESS SHELTER
Nick Honerkamp, Senior Pastor of new Covenant Church, spoke on the Community Homeless shelter program. There is a coalition of a group of charities, non-profits, and churches from all over the county. They operate the shelter six months out of the year at Camp New Life and it is manned with volunteers from different churches along with a security guard. They provide transportation from the Community Kitchen in Canton, and The Open Door in Waynesville each evening, and return the homeless there the following morning. The encouraging thing is that few of the clients they helped last year are back this year. They have helped then gain dignity, and strive to make them self sufficient, many have been helped securing jobs.

WAYNESVILLE ROTARY WELCOMES FIVE NEW MEMBERS!
President Mark welcomed into Waynesville Rotary what might be the largest class of new members in many years. Shown above are new members, Phil Inglis, John Baxley, Alan Schork, Mo Fer, and Eddie Wells along with their sponsoring Rotarians. WELCOME TO ALL! |
STOP HUNGER NOW OFF TO GREAT START! Approximately 80 Rotarians and their family and friends packed in excess of 16,000 meals on Saturday, February 20th at the Waynesville Middle School. The Rotarian group was the 3rd shift in the day’s event following Haywood County School students and Long’s Chapel Methodist Church members. It total for the day, the event shipped 41,418 meals to Stop Hunger Now. Local Rotarians were joined by District Governor Carol King and SHN District Coordinator Bruce Bingham along with several Rotarians from other clubs that came to observe the event in advance of their own efforts. The packaging event was the first of District 7670’s 1 Million Meal Goal that will culminate on April 24th in Asheville. District Gov. Carol invites all Rotarians to join the effort in Asheville as the 1 millionth meal is reached. The Rotarians packed meals until the supplies gave out. Due to a shipping miscalculation, sufficient supplies were not available to reach the initial goal of 25,000 meals packed by local Rotarians. The remaining 9,000 meals will be moved to the April 24th date for packaging. Rotarians from Haywood County matched $3,125.00 in donations made by District 7670 for a total contribution of $6,250.00 or 25,000.00 meals. Additional events will be held in Macon County on March 13th and on several dates in the Asheville/Hendersonville areas. District 7670 Team Leader, Cecil Yount, expressed his heartfelt thanks to the local Rotarians, who came together on a relatively short notice and supported this event both financially and with the gift of their time. Yount especially highlighted the contributions of the individual club champions, Blake Stanberry, Lee Starnes, and Rich Egan.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE! Manna BackPack Challenge: 31 Waynesville Rotarians accepted Karen Denny’s and Floyd Rogers’s challenge to match their donation to the Manna Food Bank Backpack program. A sponsorship is $122.00 per student. If you have made this commitment, please make your check payable to the Waynesville Rotary FOUNDATION instead of Waynesville Rotary. Your leadership has determined that it would be best for these monies to go directly to the Foundation rather than through the club account. This will also give you the advantage of some tax breaks by making the donation. Simply indicate on your check that the donation is for the Manna Food Bank Backpack Challenge. If additional members wish to join this effort, please feel free to do so. Simply make out your check as noted above and give it to Scot Worley, Lynne Barrett, Bill Bird, or Neal Ensley at one of the Friday meetings. For more information, contact Past President Lynne. Boy Scout Troop support: An additional opportunity to support our community is by making a donation to the Boy Scout Troop led by our own Rotarian Billy Dinwiddie, Jr. The Pack is in serious need of a trailer and some other items. Any interested Rotarian, especially former Scouts, are urged to support this effort. Again, please make your check payable to the Waynesville Rotary Foundation. For more information, contact Bill Bird.
