MEMBER BIOGRAPHIES WOW AUDIENCE!

Arnold Howell Karen Babcock Harvey Hintzman

Arnold Howell – Arnold was born in a log cabin in Appanoose County, Iowa.  He went to school in a one room school house where all eight grades were taught by one teacher. His parents had 7 children, and when asked one time if they were Catholic they said no - just sexy Methodist. Arnold graduated from high school in Orlando, Florida and served two hitches in the CCC. He then moved to Mulberry, Florida in Polk County and worked as a junior stenographer for the Coastline Railroad. Arnold wanted to get into the war and Uncle Sam called him on March 7, 1943. In 3 months he was on the high seas and spent 21/2 years overseas. Arnold said he was never shot at or bombed – except for one night in Paris. Arnold got home from the war on January 10, 1946 and went to work for a refrigerator supply house. On August 31, 1947 Arnold was married and has been married for 611/2 years. In an effort to improve himself and make more money, Arnold went to college on the GI Bill. Arnold said because of that education he was able to educate 3 children and have his wife be a home mother.
Arnold talked about his trip to Washington on HonorAir and said it was a marvelous experience. He thanked all involved and specifically commended the guardians. Arnold said he retired for the first time in 1986. He then taught for 3 years at the University of Central Florida. Following that he went back into private practice and retired again in 2000. He worked as a consultant until last November when he sold out and moved to Waynesville, which he said was the best move of his life.

Karen Babcock – Karen is Executive Director of Folkmoot. She is from Maryland and has been in North Carolina since December when she took on the responsibility of Folkmoot. Karen attended Towson University in Maryland and has a degree in English and a master’s in human resource development.
Karen was born in Chicago, Illinois and worked in higher education before coming to Folkmoot. She is very interested in learning about how things work and is currently very much involved in learning about Folkmoot. A priority of Karen’s is increasing Folkmoot’s endowment. Karen said she is enjoying living in Waynesville and, being a mountain biker, is having a great time riding the mountains of North Carolina.

Harvey Hintzman – Harvey grew up on a dairy farm in Menomonie, Wisconsin. His parents raised 8 children and a foster child. Harvey said that growing up on a dairy farm was hard work. You worked from 6:00 in the morning to 7:30 at night. Harvey attended a small country grade school where there were 20-25 students and one teacher.
In 1965 Harvey was married and will celebrate 44 years of marriage in July. Harvey and his wife have two children; a son who works with Harvey and a daughter who lives four miles from where Harvey grew up.
Harvey moved to Tampa, Florida in 1984 due to the economy, and stayed there for 13 years. As he could no longer stand the heat there, he moved to Georgia. There he got his contract license and worked by himself doing small remodeling. In 2004 Harvey looked at Waynesville with the thought of building houses and in 2005 moved to Waynesville. Harvey said he wants all to know that he enjoys the Rotary Club and specifically enjoyed being at the Asheville airport on Saturday night welcoming back the HonorAire WWII veterans. It was emotional for not only the veterans but for those who were there to greet them.

MAKE-UPS, MAKE-UPS, AND OH YEAH, MORE MAKE-UPS!

Your Board of Directors has recently been discussing the role of make-ups in the fellowship of our club. Having the opportunities to perform on-line make-ups has been an excellent boon for many members in being able to meet the attendance expectations of our Rotary Club and that of Rotary International. However, sometimes too much of a good thing can have less than desired consequences. The Board of Directors and your elected officers want to emphasize the importance of attending our regularly scheduled meetings. The strong foundation of fellowship in Rotary is what binds us together and is the very building block of our organization. As the current stewards of our club, the Board and Officers wish to remind members that on-line make-ups should be used as a tool to meet the attendance expectations and should never become the predominant method for maintaining membership in the local club. The Rotary International Manual of Procedures provides cogent guidelines on attendance and make-ups. Our club also remains within the spirit of R.I. by providing for occasional make-ups that are approved by the Board for purposes of attending community services events, serving on committee assignments, and other service oriented procedures. As we approach the beginning of a new year in Rotary, we ask that each Rotarian spend some time focusing on the fellowship of our Friday meetings and make a renewed effort to regular attendance using on-line make-ups as a supportive tool.

With the impending transition from one Executive Secretary to another Executive Secretary on July 1st, the Board has agreed that no make-ups will be carried forward into the new year in order that we might begin attendance charting fresh and allow our newest Executive Secretary a clean slate from which to begin his duties.

NEW FUNCTION ON CLUB WEBSITE!

Club members will find a new link on the home page of the club website. The link, Directory On-Line, will take you to the District 7670 database where you can access your Rotary account to handle updates, your Rotarian subscription, and many other items related to your membership in Rotary. This is a secure site and you will be asked for your user id (your email address as entered by our Executive Secretary) and your password, which is your account number found on the mailing label of your Rotarian magazine. New members must wait until the Executive Secretary receives back from Rotary International your ID number before you can access the site. ONLY Rotary International can create the passwords.

We are examining the many new features offerred by this on-line database. In the near future, we may be replacing our current member directory with the District Directory.
