BIEDENBACH STRESSES QUALITY OF UNC-A PROGRAM

Coach Eddie Biedenbach

Coach Eddie Biedenbach was introduced by George Escaravage. Coach Biedenbach became UNC Asheville’s 5th men’s head basketball coach in 1986 and led the team to its only NCAA appearance in 2003. Last year Coach Biedenbach became the longest tenured coach in the Big Ten conference.

Coach Biedenbach began by saying it was a pleasure to speak to Waynesville Rotary. He said he wanted to speak about several things concerning UNCA’s program, but also a little bit about us.  Coach Biedenbach said it’s been a wonderful experience to be in college coaching his entire life since graduating from college. Coach Biedenbach talked about what he says to new recruits. He tells them there is no perfect college for anyone. There are always some things that are negative such as being too far from home or to close to home, too big a school/too small a school, not enough emphasis on basketball/too much emphasis on basketball, etc. He tells them it’s up to them to make the perfect situation.

Coach Biedenbach said that at UNCA they like to say they have student athletes. He spoke about how they convey the importance of graduating from college to their students. Of UNCA’s 170 athletes, more than half are on the 3.0 list. Coach Biedenbach spoke about the UNCA basketball schedule and the fact that it has been tough over the past few years. He talked about people saying that UNCA was not going to have a winning season because of the teams they are up against. His response was he is concerned with the conference and the development of his players so they can win in the conference. He said he likes the schedule because it gives his players an opportunity to play against some of the better players, and that is what they will remember. Also playing against the large teams is a money maker for UNCA and its athletic department. Coach Biedenbach said he is proud of the team’s results in the conference.

Coach Biedenbach stated that change is important and we need to learn to adjust to life. He then had the Rotarians do a hand exercise that emphasized how changing is uncomfortable. Also to emphasize the importance of change, coach Biedenbach spoke about the improvement a group of elderly people achieved when they changed their exercise and eating regiment. Coach Biedenbach said he takes the idea of change directly to his athletes and places emphasis on physical fitness and the need to focus on proper sleeping and eating habits. However, Coach Biedenbach said that ultimately family and religion are the two most important things in the student/athletes lives, and it must be at the center of everything they do.

Coach Biedenbach closed by saying that he feels UNCA has one of the most exciting teams in the area and invited everyone to attend one of their games.

MAKE-UPS, MAKE-UPS, AND OH YEAH, MORE MAKE-UPS!

Your Board of Directors has recently been discussing the role of make-ups in the fellowship of our club. Having the opportunities to perform on-line make-ups has been an excellent boon for many members in being able to meet the attendance expectations of our Rotary Club and that of Rotary International. However, sometimes too much of a good thing can have less than desired consequences. The Board of Directors and your elected officers want to emphasize the importance of attending our regularly scheduled meetings. The strong foundation of fellowship in Rotary is what binds us together and is the very building block of our organization. As the current stewards of our club, the Board and Officers wish to remind members that on-line make-ups should be used as a tool to meet the attendance expectations and should never become the predominant method for maintaining membership in the local club. The Rotary International Manual of Procedures provides cogent guidelines on attendance and make-ups. Our club also remains within the spirit of R.I. by providing for occasional make-ups that are approved by the Board for purposes of attending community services events, serving on committee assignments, and other service oriented procedures. As we approach the beginning of a new year in Rotary, we ask that each Rotarian spend some time focusing on the fellowship of our Friday meetings and make a renewed effort to regular attendance using on-line make-ups as a supportive tool.

With the impending transition from one Executive Secretary to another Executive Secretary on July 1st, the Board has agreed that no make-ups will be carried forward into the new year in order that we might begin attendance charting fresh and allow our newest Executive Secretary a clean slate from which to begin his duties.
