WAYNESVILLE ROTARY CELEBRATES YEAR OF ACCOMPLISHMENT "Tony" Award winners Bob Brannon, Charlie Way, and Andy Anderson During ceremonies on Tuesday, June 30th, Waynesville Rotarians Andy Anderson, Bob Brannon, and Charlie Way were honored with lifetime achievement awards by their fellow Rotary club members. The three Waynesville residents are all long time members of the local Rotary club and have been instrumental in developments within Haywood County and Waynesville through the years. The three were awarded this year’s “Tony”, the Waynesville Rotary Club’s annual Award of Merit named for long time member Tony Caudill. In announcing the awards, outgoing Waynesville Rotary President Cecil Yount reminded those in attendance that “these men are the boulders upon which Waynesville Rotary has been built. Each of these men have served the local and global communities throughout their lifetimes and are truly models for the Rotary motto “Service Above Self.” Between the three honorees, over 180 years of Rotary service has been provided to the local community. During the evening’s program, Waynesville Rotarians Howard Griffin, Patrick McDowell, Michael Tormey, Edward Brown III, Karen Denny, Greg Boothroyd, Mark Clasby, and Brandon Anderson were acknowledged for having reached the Paul Harris Sustaining Member level of giving. To attain this Rotary International distinction, each member contributed $1000.00 to the Rotary International Fund. Ms. Judy Ferguson was recognized by the assembled Rotarians as she accepted the Paul Harris award earned by her husband Mike, who recently passed away. Additional Paul Harris awards were given in honor of Dr. Harry Manes by his wife Linda, Mr. Jeremy Pressley by fellow Rotarian Johnny Phillips, HCC President Rose Johnson by Rotarian Rolf Kaufman and Yount by Rotarian Chip Killian. New Rotary District Governor, Carol King of Asheville, then inducted the 2009-2010 slate of Officers for Waynesville Rotary. King ushered into office Clasby as President, Mr. Billy Case as President-elect, Anderson as Secretary, and Mr. Scot Worley as Treasurer. In her remarks, King spoke of the duties of each office and challenged the newly inducted officers to be supportive of their new President and to “hold steady the wheel of the Rotary ship”. In his closing remarks, Yount listed the many accomplishments of the Waynesville club over the past year. In addition to sending 48 WWII Veterans to Washington as part of HonorAir, Yount reminded the Rotarians that the club was the recipient of the Rotary International Presidential Citation award for 2008-09, was recognized as a Distinguished Club in the large club category of Rotary District 7670, fed over 500 families Christmas meals, donated over 125 blankets in response to last winter’s heating crisis in Haywood, won the Haywood Waterways Service Club of the Year award, and continued the club’s long traditions of Ringing the Bell for Salvation Army and supporting 6 scholarship students through the Waynesville Rotary Foundation. Following his induction as the new President, Clasby listed the points of emphasis in the coming year, which will include literacy, clean water, and increased community service through increased Rotary membership. Clasby spoke of the personal significance for him as this is the 10th year of his being a Cancer Survivor and of the opportunities before him for service to the community. The evening’s activities started with a social hour with entertainment by the Haywood Swing Band under the Direction of Mr. Dick Trevarthen. The band was accompanied by soloist and Waynesville Rotarian Ms. Lyn Donley. The meal was served by J. Arthur’s of Maggie under the Pavilion of Laurel Ridge Country Club. BREWER TALKS "GREEN" Jim Brewer’s topic was It’s Not Easy Being “Green” Energy – Energy Needs in the 21st Century. Jim began by defining Green Energy. Green Energy is a term used to describe sources of energy that are considered to be environmentally friendly and non-polluting. More importantly, Green Energy does not produce CO2 emissions. Jim spoke about how electricity was generated by source in 2008. Coal dominated by generating 48% of the electricity. Natural gas made up 22% and Nuclear made up 19%. Together these three sources of energy made up over 80% of the energy production in the United States. Jim said that less than 2% of the petroleum imported into the United States is used for the generation of electricity. So, there really is no connection when you hear that we need to increase our solar/wind energy to lessen our need for foreign oil. Jim outlined the kilowatts (KW) generated by renewable energy sources which include wind, biomass, geothermal and solar. That amounted to 106 Million KW. He then showed the total energy consumed by the United States in 2007 which was 4 trillion KW, and projected that by 2030 estimated demand will be 5.5 trillion KW. There is obviously a significant disparity between the generated renewable energy sources and the overall energy needs. Jim then spoke about the advantages and disadvantages of nuclear energy. In particular Jim again noted that nuclear power currently accounts for about 20% of the total net electricity generated in the United States. Jim emphasized that nuclear energy is a proven technology, is a reliable and stable source of energy, does not produce greenhouse gases and is not location dependent. He acknowledged that nuclear energy has high initial capital costs and is time consuming to bring on-line due to consuming regulations and bureaucracy. Also, the waste generated by nuclear power needs to be addressed. In summary, Jim said the three most popular “green” energies - biofuels, wind and solar - have serious drawbacks that while not insurmountable must be weighed in the discussion of future energy needs. He noted that nuclear energy is safe, dependable and proven with sufficient fuel sources to power the world for 150 years.

MAKE-UPS, MAKE-UPS, AND OH YEAH, MORE MAKE-UPS! Your Board of Directors has recently been discussing the role of make-ups in the fellowship of our club. Having the opportunities to perform on-line make-ups has been an excellent boon for many members in being able to meet the attendance expectations of our Rotary Club and that of Rotary International. However, sometimes too much of a good thing can have less than desired consequences. The Board of Directors and your elected officers want to emphasize the importance of attending our regularly scheduled meetings. The strong foundation of fellowship in Rotary is what binds us together and is the very building block of our organization. As the current stewards of our club, the Board and Officers wish to remind members that on-line make-ups should be used as a tool to meet the attendance expectations and should never become the predominant method for maintaining membership in the local club. The Rotary International Manual of Procedures provides cogent guidelines on attendance and make-ups. Our club also remains within the spirit of R.I. by providing for occasional make-ups that are approved by the Board for purposes of attending community services events, serving on committee assignments, and other service oriented procedures. As we approach the beginning of a new year in Rotary, we ask that each Rotarian spend some time focusing on the fellowship of our Friday meetings and make a renewed effort to regular attendance using on-line make-ups as a supportive tool. With the impending transition from one Executive Secretary to another Executive Secretary on July 1st, the Board has agreed that no make-ups will be carried forward into the new year in order that we might begin attendance charting fresh and allow our newest Executive Secretary a clean slate from which to begin his duties. |
