MIKE POORE ADDERSSES ROTARIANS ON HOSPITAL SYSTEM UPATES!
Mo Fer, program chair, introduced Mike Poore, CEO of Haywood Regional Medical Center and Medwest. Mr. Poore began his remarks by identifying the members of MedWest as Haywood Regional Medical Center, C J Harris Hospital in Sylva and Swain County Hospital in Bryson City. Harris and Swain County Hospitals used to make up West Care and now MedWest is governed by a Board of Directors made up of seven representatives from Haywood Regional Medical Center and seven representatives from West Care. Mr. Poore identified the leadership team for MedWest and described their areas of responsibility. Mr. Poore discussed the economic effect that MedWest has on our area. HRMC’s Board has recently approved plans to begin an inpatient hospice center which will be the first one west of Asheville which will contain an outreach center to be added later. The cost is projected to be $3.6 million and will add 16 new jobs. HRMC plans to move the Urgent Care unit from behind the hospital to Canton to better serve the citizens at a projected cost of $2.5 million. This unit will include occupational therapy as well. Additionally, a surgery center with a women’s center and an outpatient rehabilitation center is planned at an estimated cost of $9.5 million. Mr. Poore indicated that the capacity of the three medical centers in MedWest is approximately 300 beds. He stated that C. J. Harris is expanding its medical center at a cost of $6.7 million and Swain County is expanding its facilities with a $6.5 million project. HRMC has an operating budget of $230 million with 2100 employees who earn a combined annual salary of $84 million. The average salary of an employee at HRMC is $40,000. Mr. Poore indicated that HRMC serves approximately 50 percent of the population in Haywood County with the remainder being served in surrounding facilities. He stated that the immediate goal of HRMC is to pick up an additional 25% of the population which will enable HRMC to add approximately 100 positions. Currently, there are 240 physicians in MedWest and the services offered are both broad and deep. Following his remarks, Mr. Poore entertained several questions from the audience. He indicated that some of the goals that HRMC is currently focusing on include developing a one stop women’s center, growing surgical services, growing primary care services, using the hospital as a recruiting tool for new physicians and improving emergency services. Medicaid and Medicare patients make up 55% of the hospital work load at HRMC. He addressed Obama Care by stating that it will be several years before a true assessment can be made of this new Federal legislation.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE! Manna BackPack Challenge: 31 Waynesville Rotarians accepted Karen Denny’s and Floyd Rogers’s challenge to match their donation to the Manna Food Bank Backpack program. A sponsorship is $122.00 per student. If you have made this commitment, please make your check payable to the Waynesville Rotary FOUNDATION instead of Waynesville Rotary. Your leadership has determined that it would be best for these monies to go directly to the Foundation rather than through the club account. This will also give you the advantage of some tax breaks by making the donation. Simply indicate on your check that the donation is for the Manna Food Bank Backpack Challenge. If additional members wish to join this effort, please feel free to do so. Simply make out your check as noted above and give it to Scot Worley, Lynne Barrett, Bill Bird, or Neal Ensley at one of the Friday meetings. For more information, contact Past President Lynne. Boy Scout Troop support: An additional opportunity to support our community is by making a donation to the Boy Scout Troop led by our own Rotarian Billy Dinwiddie, Jr. The Pack is in serious need of a trailer and some other items. Any interested Rotarian, especially former Scouts, are urged to support this effort. Again, please make your check payable to the Waynesville Rotary Foundation. For more information, contact Bill Bird. Boy Scout Troop Leaders: Troop 318 is in need of volunteers to act as Assistant Troop leaders. If interested, please contact Billy Dinwiddie either by e-mail or phone, 550-1314. You may write to Billy by CLICKING HERE!
